Questions
Frequently asked
What is Bafflery?
Bafflery is a subscription mystery studio. Each case is a multi-month investigation delivered through physical mail, in-character email and text, the occasional phone call, and a public companion podcast. You are the audience and, in places, the collaborator.
How does it work?
Once a cohort begins, you receive physical envelopes across the run of the case. Between envelopes, materials arrive through other channels. A private subscriber Casebook holds everything you have collected so far, plus a notebook for your own theories. The case has a definite end. So does your enrollment.
How long does a case run?
It depends on the case. Each case page lists its run length. Cohorts are small and run on shared calendars; everyone in your cohort is at roughly the same point in the story at the same time.
What do I get physically versus digitally?
Physically: envelopes containing letters, documents, photographs, and assorted ephemera produced as real, archival objects. Digitally: in-character email, text messages, optional phone calls, the public podcast, and your Casebook with an evidence locker, notebook, and Architect File.
Can I do this with friends?
Yes. The case is designed to be enjoyable solo, but a small group sharing one enrollment and meeting to compare notes is, frankly, the ideal way to experience it. We do not currently sell group enrollments; one enrollment, one mailing address.
Is it scary?
It is a murder investigation, so there is grief and there are unpleasant details. It is not horror. There are no jump scares, no graphic content for shock value, and nothing that arrives unannounced through a channel you have not opted into.
What is the price?
Enrollment is a one-time payment for the full case. A founding-cohort discount applies. Each case page lists its current price.
When does it start?
Each case page lists the cohort start date when enrollment is open. We will write the waitlist before anyone else when a new cohort opens.
Can I cancel?
Yes. You can cancel from your account at any time. Access continues through the end of the case run; you are not charged again. Refunds for already-shipped physical materials are handled case by case.
What is the Architect File?
The Architect File is a persistent dossier in your Casebook that follows you across every case you subscribe to. A recurring antagonist appears, obliquely, in each case; certain pieces of evidence are flagged as relevant and accumulate in the File. Over multiple cases, a larger picture emerges.
Do I need to subscribe to the podcast?
No. The podcast is public and free, and is part of the case, but a subscriber-only feed inside your Casebook delivers the same episodes alongside the rest of your materials. Subscribe in whichever app you prefer, or just listen from the Casebook.
Is this real, or is it fiction?
It is fiction. All characters, places, emails, texts, calls, and recordings produced as part of each case are written and performed. Any resemblance to real persons or events is coincidental.
